Shook & Stone Injury Lawyers is proud to announce Tanner Snyder as the recipient of the 2025 “An Ideal Lawyer’s Portrait: Representation Matters” Scholarship. The $2,500 award recognizes students who take a thoughtful look at what it means to represent others in the legal field.
Tanner, an electrical engineering student at the University of Nevada, Reno, stood out for his clear understanding of the role lawyers play in helping people. In his essay, he highlights values like honesty, dedication, and service.
He wrote that lawyers do more than handle legal matters. They stand beside people during hard times and make sure those individuals are treated fairly.
Tanner on What Makes a Good Lawyer
Tanner was drawn to the scholarship topic because it asked a simple but important question: what makes someone an ideal lawyer?Â
In his essay, he explained that lawyers help shape laws, defend rights, and make sure people’s voices are heard. He believes a good lawyer is not just skilled, but also honest, caring, and truly committed to helping others.Â
As Tanner put it, “Lawyers play an important role in helping people and making sure everyone is treated fairly.”
In his essay, he also wrote that clients often enter the legal system during moments of “fear, loss, or injustice,” which is why empathy and respect matter in how lawyers represent others.
A Strong Personal Influence
Tanner credits his father as his biggest inspiration. He describes him as his best friend and someone who always supported him.
Watching his father work through challenges and successes shaped how Tanner approaches life. He learned to keep going, take responsibility, and do his best even when things are hard.
Staying Active Outside the Classroom
When he is not in the classroom, Tanner participates in activities that reflect discipline and compassion for others. He was part of his high school’s marching band, which taught him about the importance of teamwork and working with others.Â
“Being part of the band required a lot of practice and working together with others to perform well,” he said.
Tanner also volunteers at a local animal shelter, helping care for cats in need. “Volunteering there has been a great experience because I enjoy helping animals and making sure they are cared for properly.”

Education and Academic Goals
Tanner plans to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering, a field that plays a major role in today’s technology-driven world.Â
“Electrical engineering is a challenging field, but it is also very important in today’s world because so many things rely on electricity and technology,” he said. “Studying this major will allow me to learn important skills and prepare for a strong career in the future.”
At the same time, he is thinking about how his education can support his long-term goals, including his interest in working with animals.
Looking Ahead: Career and Life Goals
After graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno, Tanner plans to continue building his career while working toward his long-term goals. He hopes to attend veterinary school and eventually open his own animal rehabilitation ranch, where he can help injured or abandoned animals recover and live better lives.
How This Scholarship Supports Tanner’s Future
For many students, the cost of college can create stress and uncertainty. Tanner shared how financial support can make a real difference.Â
“My goal is to have a paid education so I can focus on building a successful career and stable life,” he said.Â
“With the support from Shook & Stone, I will be able to continue working toward my academic goals and feel more confident about my future.”
